Ark of Covenant

The Ark of the Covenant

The Ark of the Covenant

The Lord said to Moses, saying
And they shall make an ark of acacia wood 45 inches long, 27 inches wide and 27 inches high.
And you shall overlay it with pure gold inside and out you shall overlay it.
You shall make the lid pure gold called the mercy seat - Hebrew meaning “place of Atonement”.
And you shall make two cherubim of gold; the cherubim shall stretch out their wings above, covering the mercy seat with their wings.
You shall put the mercy seat on top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the Testimony the  two tablets of stone containing the Ten Commandments that Moses had received from on Mount Sinai. Exodus 20, and a golden pot of manna and Aaron’s rod that budded. And there I will meet with you, and I will speak with you.” Exodus 25:1-22.

The Purpose of the Ark

Exodus 25:8 declares the purpose of the Ark: “And let them make Me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them.” The ark represents a visible reminder of God’s presence with the Hebrew people. The mercy seat, covered with gold, symbolized God’s throne and His reign in their hearts as their sovereign Lord. The Ark is the most sacred object to the Israelites in the wilderness. It was carefully carried in a concealed badger skins as they traveled with cloud leading them by day and fire by night.

The Holy of Holies

With the help of four poles inserted on each side of the Ark, it was carried by four Levites at the front of the people as they traveled through the wilderness for 40 years and later into the Promised Land. The Ark was placed in the Holy of Holies

1 Kings 8:8, "the innermost room”, both in the tabernacle of Moses and in the temple of Solomon. Only the two tablets of stone were left inside while placed in Solomon’s temple. 1Kings 8:9 The Ark disappeared after the invasion of Jerusalem by the Babylonian empire in 586 B.C

The Ark of the Covenant is also called:

The Ark of God
The Ark of the Lord
The Ark of the Testimony
The Beauty of Israel

The Day of Atonement

In Leviticus 16:15-16 the Lord commanded the High Priest to make atonement:

“Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering which is for the people, and bring its blood within the veil, and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, sprinkling it upon the mercy seat and before the mercy seat; thus he shall make atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the people of Israel, and because of their transgressions, …”

The High Priest sprinkled the blood once each year on the Day of Atonement to atone for sin of Israel. It was at the Holy of Holies that God communed with the High Priest, and Moses and the presence of God rested with His people. Numbers 7:89

The Ark was carried before the Israelites when:

They left Mount Sinai. Num. 10:33
They crossed the Jordan River to enter Canaan. Josh. 4:9-11
They circled the walls of Jericho before the city fell. Josh. 6:1-20

New Covenant Written on the Tablets of Hearts

Today we live under a new covenant of grace as foretold by Prophet Jeremiah: "Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant which I made with their fathers then I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant which they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my Law within them, and I will write it upon their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people”.
 Jer. 31:31-33.

New Covenant Purchased with Jesus’ Blood

The new covenant was purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ when the Lord took the bread at the Last Supper, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, saying: “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me'. Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.” Luke 22:19,20.

The Blood Gives Full Access to God’s Presence and Blessings

The blood offering for the sins of all human races was given once and for all at Calvary. The new covenant is an everlasting covenant sealed with blood of Jesus Christ. Jer. 50:5 Because of the blood of Jesus, believers now have full access to God’s presence all the way to the Holy of Holies that was “rent in twain” Matt. 25:51. In Acts chapter 2, the Holy Spirit, the carbon copy of Christ, was poured out upon His people. The presence of God that is foreshadowed through the Ark of the Covenant is now fulfilled through the new covenant by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the believers. Hallelujah!
